What is Pre-Dental Hygiene Emphasis: General Transfer Major?

This is a transfer program designed for students wishing to qualify for admission for a Bachelor’s Degree in dental hygiene at senior institutions. Some institutions require the completion of the associate degree before accepting applicants into specific programs. Other institutions will accept students who have met certain prerequisites in an advanced standing dental hygiene program. Students should consult the catalog of the senior institutions for specific requirements regarding admission and prerequisites. This major is not intended for students seeking an Associate of Applied Science degree in dental hygiene. Students should work closely with an Academic advisor to select appropriate courses.

What can I do with this degree?

With this degree the student will be able to transfer the credits to other senior educational institutions to complete the clinical requirement to obtain a bachelor or master’s degree in a dental hygienist program.

Dental hygienist: Provide preventive dental health services to the public. Services include oral and facial exams, periodontal debridement, exposing and processing dental radiographs, applying decay-preventive agents and preparing clients for dental procedures and making clients comfortable during exams and procedures, give instructions for oral care wellness.

Program Outcomes

All students who complete a degree designated as a Tennessee Transfer Pathway will be able to do the following:

  • Communicate effectively through oral and written modes, using conventions appropriate to their audience and purpose, including critical listening and reading skills.
  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of scientific principles and concepts.
  • Apply relevant mathematical modeling to a variety of applied or theoretical problems.
  • Basic and advanced understanding of the biologic and chemical processes of a living organisms.
  • General education pre-requisites that prepare the student to understand and apply technology

What Are My Options to Pay for This Degree?

Apply for financial aid at www.FAFSA.gov. A student is encouraged to apply early for financial aid and must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the FAFSA Renewal Application as soon as possible after October 1 to ensure that the Financial Aid Office receives the Institutional Student Information Record and other documents prior to the priority deadline. July 1st is the priority deadline for applying for the fall semester and December 1st for the spring semester.
